Anambra state current affairs

Anambra State is one of Nigeria’s 36 states, located in the country’s southeastern region. The state is named after the Anambra River, which was formed in 1976 from the former East Central State. Awka, the state capital, is a rapidly expanding city with a population that grew from 300,000 to 2.5 million people between 2006 and 2018. The historic port city of Onitsha, which dates back to the pre-colonial period, is still a significant center of commerce in the state.

Anambra State, dubbed the “Light of the Country,” is Nigeria’s eighth-most populous state despite being the second smallest in area.

Since at least the 9th century AD, the region now known as Anambra State has been home to numerous civilizations, including the ancient Kingdom of Nri, whose capital was the historic town of Igbo-Ukwu within the state. Anambra State’s population is estimated to be 98 percent Igbo, with the Igbo language serving as a lingua franca in the state.

Anambra State was a part of the secessionist Republic of Biafra established by Igbo nationalists during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970). During the battle, Anambra State was hit by a major famine that killed off a large portion of the population.

Anambra State is now a highly urbanized state that has made significant progress in lowering its poverty rate.

The History of Anambra state current affairs

Archaeological excavations at Igbo-Ukwu and Ezira have shown that Anambra’s history dates back to the 9th century AD. It houses magnificent works of art made of iron, bronze, copper, and pottery from the ancient Kingdom of Nri. These have revealed a complex divine Kingship administrative structure that ruled in the Anambra region from c. From 948 A.D. to 1911 A.D. Local families had hereditary rights to kingship in some cities, such as Ogidi and others, for centuries.

In their form of indirect rule of the Protectorate of South Nigeria, Great Britain recognized some of these traditional kings and leaders.

They began appointing noble leaders as Warrant Chiefs in the 19th century, giving them the authority to collect taxes and perform other duties.

Following growing tensions with Northern Nigeria, Igbo-dominated Anambra seceded as part of an independent Biafra in 1967. Biafran engineers built a relief airstrip in the town of Uli/Amorka during the Nigerian/Biafran war (1967–1970). (code named “Annabelle”). Extremely dangerous relief flights took off from Sao Tome and other locations, carrying loads of food and medicine for the famine-stricken Biafrans.

The Uli/Amorka airstrip was where American pilots including Alex Nicoll and others dropped off loads of relief supplies for the Biafran people.

Carl Gustaf von Rosen resigned as a Red Cross relief pilot, disgusted by the poverty and mounting death toll in Biafra due to malnutrition, as well as the Nigerian Airforce’s constant harassment of the relief planes. He assisted Biafra in forming an air force of five Malmö MFI-9 Minicoin planes stationed at the Uga airstrip. In honor of the babies who died of hunger within Biafra, he called his small yet successful air force “Babies of Biafra.”

Enugu was the capital of Old Anambra State, which was formed in 1976 from parts of East Central State. Anambra was divided into two provinces, Anambra and Enugu, after a reorganization in 1991. Awka is the state capital of Anambra.
